Nippon: Zaibatsu is a new edition of Nippon, a streamlined economic majority game. Players control zaibatsu: enormous conglomerates of interconnected businesses driving the Japanese economy in the age of the Industrial Revolution.

During the game, players invest in new industries, build factories and railways, and produce goods to saturate local markets and fulfill contracts — all to grow their influence and power and become rulers of the modernized country. Players are free in their playstyle and profit strategy: they choose what to score victory points on, determine the pace with income turns, and race to secure the most favorable factories, markets, and bonuses.

All core mechanisms of the original Nippon are present, but components, illustrations, and design have been upgraded, and many game elements have been reworked to bring the game in line with modern trends. Nippon: Zaibatsu introduces new resource types, ships have been thoroughly revised with new Iwakura mission rules, factories are much more variable, and consolidation turns yield new rewards — and much more. Additionally, the game now includes a solo mode driven by an automa.
